Toronto, March 1896. The Reverend Charles Howard sat in judgement on the poor, assessing their applications for the workhouse. Handsome and charming, he was well liked by the community, particularly the women. But now he is dead: stabbed, brutally beaten and robbed of his boots and pocket watch.
Is it a simple case of a burglary gone wrong, or has one of the vagrants Howard turned away taken their revenge? The evidence for either conclusion is too slight for Detective Murdoch, whose investigation takes him deep into the hidden world of the city’s destitute.
